Economic Development

With the federal government so inextricably linked to our local economy, we should constantly be looking for ways to encourage a diversification of our economy.

I support cutting the commercial property tax surcharge, a surcharge already being earmarked to fund the bonds for the Columbia Pike trolley, in half. There would still be enough revenue to put towards other worthy transportation projects. And, it would put more money back in the hands of local job creators.

I also propose an initiative to work with the Chamber of Commerce, as well as the entire business community, and county staff to identify ways to streamline or eliminate barriers to starting, growing and expanding a business in Arlington, especially small businesses. Arlington should have an “Open for Business” sign on our door.

One idea for a pilot project would be to allow a business applying for a permit the opportunity to be assigned a case officer to guide their permit through the bureaucracy.
